As chillier weather quickly approaches, people are starting to think about spending at least some time during the colder months in Florida. For those creative people who enjoy using stitches, fabrics, fibers, textiles, beads and other mixed media in their art-making and those who love to discover new fiber art classes, CreatingGayleLLC has launched two brand new CreatingU – Art Quilt Retreats to let people escape the cold while feeding their creativity and introducing quilting to a whole new generation.
While most people hear the word “quilt” and think about their grandmother, CreatingU is set to show attendees quilting in a completely different light. Technically meeting the definition of a quilt (three fabric layers joined by stitches), these modern art quilts are certainly not your grandmother’s quilts.
“The modern art quilt movement is bridging generations,” says fiber artist and art quilter, Gayle of CreatingGayleLLC. “I enjoy guiding students of all ages – from 20-somethings to seniors, as well as teens and tweens – to spark their creativity while making original works of art, without patterns and without rules … and often without rulers.”
These modern art quilting workshops offer attendees the opportunity to spark their own creativity over three days and two nights at the Hilton Doubletree Suites at Rocky Point. An all-suite hotel property conveniently located on the waters of Tampa Bay, close to the Tampa International Airport and central to the area’s beautiful beaches and fun Florida attractions, the hotel allows CreatingU – Art Quilt Retreat students of all ages to enjoy their time while being inspired, learning new modern art quilt techniques, creating unique works of art and enjoying not only the warm winter sunshine in Tampa Bay but also the colorful camaraderie of kindred spirits.
The CreatingU – Art Quilt Retreats will be held December 6-8, 2015 and February 21-23, 2016.
“Our open studio and classes will be limited to 25 students at each event in order to keep an intimate environment and foster new friendships and creative connections,” says Gayle. “I’m so jazzed to say that in addition to the local students who are already registered, we have students who are flying in to Tampa to escape the cold and enjoy all that we have to offer. We are going to have such fun.”
With her “no mistakes” approach to colorful and tactile art-making, and using an unlimited array of vibrant fabrics, fibers and mixed media elements as her palette, Gayle personally designs, as well as guides her students in creating original works of art, which include abstract landscapes inspired by their own photography and scenes in nature. Gayle draws inspiration from the tropical natural environment where she lives in Tampa Bay.
After years of students asking when she was going to offer extended overnight workshops and art retreats, Gayle has done just that.
“I am so excited to host my first Art Quilt Retreats this winter right here in Tampa Bay under my ‘CreatingU – Sparking Creativity’ division of CreatingGayleLLC,” Gayle beams.
REGISTRATION for both CreatingU – Art Quilt Retreats is now open, with priority Doubletree Suites hotel rates for CreatingU students (which will also be honored for nights before and/or after the quilt retreat), for a block of rooms if booked before NOV. 4, 2015 (for the December 2015 retreat), and before JAN. 22, 2016 (for the February 2016 retreat).
