Please join us at FMoPA from 6-7 p.m. on January 8, 2016 for the opening reception fundraiser for Sophan Theam’s Faces of Alzheimer’s, an exhibition featuring 50 recent, journalistic portraits of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Following the reception, Ms. Theam will speak about her work from 7- 8 p.m. The exhibition runs through February 24, 2016.
Sophan Theam’s compelling images, taken of individuals living in the Tampa Bay area between the spring and fall of 2015, provide a perspective beyond the overwhelming statistics and give focus to the unique persons living with Alzheimer’s. Theam began her career as a registered nurse and now works full-time as a photographer. Born in a Thai refugee camp following her family’s escape from the war in Cambodia – a period of her family’s life that is void of family photos –Theam is driven to capture photographs of people in all stages of life as a means of preserving thoughtful, sensitive images and to pay tribute to the individual’s life and experiences.
“We value Ms. Theam’s portraits from aesthetic and social standpoints, especially given the high rate of Alzheimer’s in the state of Florida. We are honored to be in a position where we can share such fine portraiture that gracefully and sensitively humanizes this serious, widespread illness,” says Zora Carrier, FMoPA’s Executive Director.
The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts is one of fewer than ten museums in the United States dedicated exclusively to photography and one of two such museums in the state of Florida. FMoPA seeks to enrich the lives of the citizens of the Tampa Bay area by providing rare, specialized access to the wonders of photography not only as an aesthetic form but also as a multi-faceted historical and contemporary document of our world through exhibitions, education, outreach programs, and local collaborations.
Admission to the opening reception fundraiser (6-7 p.m.) featuring live instrumental music and refreshments is $25. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at http://bit.ly/FMOPATickets. Proceeds support the exhibition and opening reception event.
Admission to the artist lecture (7-8 p.m.) is free for members and students. Suggested donation for not-yet members is $10.00.
