New Season, New Teams: Bournemouth
First match: Bournemouth v. Aston Villa, Sat., August 8, 10 a.m. ET
The upcoming Premier League season will be Bournemouth’s first ever in the top division of English football. Celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, the club earned promotion as champions of the second-tier Football League Championship. Current manager Eddie Howe, now in his second stint in charge of the team, was named permanent manager in January 2009, at the age of 31, and was challenged with maintaining the club’s professional status. Few gave the Cherries a chance at survival, but through Howe’s organization and attention to detail, Bournemouth finished 21st, two places above the relegation zone. The following season (2009-10), Howe guided the team to a 2nd-place finish and automatic promotion to League One.
The club has been in existence since the 19th century, with roots that can be traced back to 1890, when it was known as “Boscombe St. Johns Institute Football Club.” They didn‘t emerge from the bottom two tiers of English Football until 1987, almost a century after their founding. The city of Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England. There’s a tangible sense of romance surrounding the club’s climb to the apex of English football, illustrated by the club’s intimate home ground, Vitality Stadium, which will be the second-smallest stadium to ever host a Premier League match, with a capacity of 11,700.
