Central Florida’s social enterprise community will be center stage beginning Thursday morning for the Gasparilla Interactive Conference at HCC’s Ybor City Campus.

Thursday morning will feature a keynote by Phil Michaels, the founder and CEO of Tembo Education, a social enterprise based at the University of Tampa.

Following the keynote will be a panel discussion on social enterprise consisting of Michaels; Richard Berman, Visiting Social Entrepreneurship Professor at the University of South Florida MUMA College of Business; Debbie Fara, founder and CEO of Orlando based Bajalia Trading Company and Shawn Seipler, CEO of Clean the World, also based in Orlando.

The panel, “Going Beyond Greed: Global Implications of Social Enterprise” could not be more timely said Vinny Tafuro, panel moderator and Conscious Capitalism Florida Chapter founder and CEO. The public discussion around social enterprise and the ability of companies to be a force for good is growing.

“Nearly all of Central Florida’s colleges and universities have embraced social entrepreneurship with funded programs catering to millennials’ desire to evolve corporate purpose.” says Tafuro, adding that 2014’s passage of Benefit Corporation legislation illustrated that the state’s lawmakers also recognize the shift.

“The question of corporate purpose made the March cover of Inc Magazine, which suggests “Go Ahead, Be Evil” to capture readers attention to their interview with two notable entrepreneurs. Shark Tank’s Kevin O’Leary and Adam Lowry, co-founder of Method.

In it O’Leary sides with the opinions of economist Milton Friedman, that business should only focus on profits while Lowry argues that countless entrepreneurs are proving Friedman wrong.

Creative Loafing said the Gasparilla Interactive lineup has potential “for education, inspiration and alternative avenues of thought” and that the varied topics being addressed “just might lead to the next big thing in any number of contemporary fields.”

Tafuro is also the executive director of the Gasparilla Interactive Conference and the board’s of both organizations arranged for the partnership with Conscious Capitalism Florida to offer a $50 conference registration. Tafuro says “the limited offer will allow people to attend that might not have otherwise been able to attend” noting that it’s hard for locals to take two days off to attend a conference.

The conference will be held in Historic Ybor City on Thursday and Friday, March 10th and 11th 2016 at the Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City Campus, Mainstage Theatre and Performing Arts Building.
