Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman backs a recent study reported in JAMA Dermatology describing the burden of eczema and its significantly increased health care and costs.

Also known as atopic dermatitis, eczema is a skin condition characterized by irritated skin due to the release of inflammatory chemicals in the body. Common symptoms include a combination of itchy, dry and red patchy skin on areas of the body including the face, hands and neck.
According to the population-based analysis of 2010 and 2012 data from the National Health Interview Survey, U.S. adults with eczema reported they had significantly higher health care costs, use of resources and lost workdays, than adults who didn’t have eczema.
The skin condition was also associated to 53 percent higher odds of losing six or more workdays, with considerably higher odds of doctor visits, emergency departments, urgent care centers, and hospitals for varying causes.
The Tampa dermatologist, who is currently conducting clinical trials for eczema, suggests researching improved methods in which eczema patients can have access to healthcare in the future.
“This is something eczema patients have to deal with every day and we need to start paying better attention,” said Dr. Forman. “We should be actively researching better modes of healthcare access for adults who suffer from the skin disease.”
