Tony Dungy, a former coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who calls Tampa home, tweeted that he and his wife were giving $5,000 for Confederate monument removal in Tampa.

“Our County says private $$ must be raised to move Confederate statue. Lauren and I are in for $5K. We challenge Bucs Rays Lightning to help!” wrote Dungy.

And Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn wrote out a check for $1,000.

“Not a City statue but I have a moral obligation to do my part. Now take it down,” Buckhorn wrote.

Now, the Tampa Bay Rays, Buccaneers, Lightning donated money toward the statue’s removal. The announcement came in a short statement.

“Recognizing that this monument does not reflect the values of our community, in collaboration with the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, our organizations have dedicated funds to assist in moving the statue from the public space in front of the courthouse,” the teams said in a joint statement. “Now more than ever before, we must stand united and committed to diversity and inclusion as we all attempt to heal from the tragedy in Charlottesville.”

Alex Sink, a former gubernatorial candidate, contributed $1,000.

“This divisive symbol has no place in the heart of our city – a city built on rich multicultural history. Let’s move it!” she said.

“Let’s get rid of this symbol of hated, sedition and treason on our public land,” he wrote.

Yesterday, the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners voted 4-2 to give fundraisers 30 days to bring in $140,000–half of the cost to move the monument from the old courthouse in downtown Tampa to a cemetery in the suburb of Brandon. Commissioners expressed concern about using so much taxpayer dollars to move the statue.
