Following are highlights from today’s NBC coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi:
Olympic primetime host Bob Costas to Olympic correspondent Mary Carillo following her feature on Siberia: “Ok, you’re from Naples, Fla. You’re a tennis player. I know that you got it in one take because you’re Mary Carillo but how cold were you standing out there in -43?”
Carillo after her feature on the city of Yatsuk in Siberia – the coldest city on Earth: “I’m so impressed by, not just Russia, but its people. They really are a remarkable collection of humanity.”
Play-by-play voice Dan Hicks on U.S. skier Bode Miller (Miller is expected to compete in the super combined on Fri., Feb. 14 on NBC): “Always entertaining. You never know what’s going to happen. It’s like watching Phil Mickelson in golf – that genius kind of high artistry – but then again, you take risks.”
Analyst and Olympian Todd Brooker on Miller’s final downhill run (Miller placed eighth): “He was fighting his skis all the way – trying to keep control of them. They were chattering, twerking out here. I think he was also fighting his composure.”
Analyst and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton on four-time Olympic medalist Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia: “I am so grateful he came back. Just to be able to witness this and to be a part of this, what he’s created in this building and how he’s touched these people… it was so thrilling to experience.”
Analyst Sandra Bezic on 15-year old Russian skater Yulia Lipnitskaya (Ladies’ figure skating begins Wed., Feb. 19 on NBCSN): “She’s been fascinating to watch.… She is saying, ‘No. Why not now? I’m here now. I’m ready now. This could be my Olympics,’ – not unlike Tara Lipinski in Nagano in 1998.”
Hamilton on Lipnitskaya: “She has so many amazing qualities at this age, and she’s just able to go out and command the ice. Such a small person has such size on the ice.”
Play-by-play voice Tom Hammond on U.S. skater Gracie Gold: “She has everything going for her – jumping ability, grace, style, and the name.”
Bezic on the strengths of ice dance rivals Team USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Canada’s Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir: “What [Davis and White] have is a super exciting blend of musicality and athleticism… they never make a mistake, and that’s why they’ve been unbeatable for the last few seasons. When I look at Virtue and Moir, I just think quintessentially ice dance.”
Analyst Todd Richards on Team USA’s snowboard slopestyle gold medal sweep: “It’s one thing to be considered the favorite, it’s another thing to step up and deliver, and that’s exactly what Jamie Anderson did today and what Sage Kotsenburg did for the men yesterday.”
Two-time Olympic moguls medalist Hannah Kearney on her “Bronze feels a lot like a broken heart.” tweet: “It does mean a lot to me. I’m very proud to win this medal for my country. But of course, for me, coming in as the favorite and not skiing my best was devastating and I compared it to heartbreak – which I haven’t actually really experienced, but I can imagine – because moguls skiing has been like a boyfriend to me for the last four years. It’s been my relationship. It’s been the constant every day. It’s been what I’ve been committed to and worked hard at. It felt very devastating to not achieve my goal but I still am proud of the bronze medal.”
