Signs it is Time to Replace Your HVAC System

An HVAC system is an expensive investment.  Unfortunately, no matter how well your system is maintained, you will eventually have to replace your HVAC system.  A damaged or old HVAC unit can result in higher energy costs, as well as poor indoor air quality.  Not sure if you need to repair or replace your HVAC unit?  Here are some signs that it is time:

1. Your energy bill keeps increasing

While there will be costs in your energy bill that change during the seasons, bills from the same months should be comparably similar.  As your HVAC system ages, it’s efficiency tends to decline.  This is especially problematic to those that don’t have their HVAC units serviced at least once or twice a year. Regular maintenance will keep your HVAC unit running as efficiently as possible, but at some point, the HVAC unit will have to be replaced.

2. Your AC unit is more than 10 years old

When was your HVAC unit installed? The Department of Energy recommends replacing HVAC systems every 10 to 15 years. Also, HVAC units that are more than 10 years old are likely to use a refrigerant known as R-22 .  This type of Freon is not only outdated, it is harmful to the environment and extremely expensive.  Upgrading to a new HVAC unit will cut down on your energy costs and help the environment.

3. Repairs cost more than half the cost of a new HVAC system

If you are trying to decide whether to replace or repair your HVAC system and it’s more than 10 years old, purchasing a new HVAC system will be a better investment.  All HVAC systems will need repair from time to time, but if it is costing you more than half of the cost of a new HVAC system, a new HVAC system is the smarter investment.
