David has carried out research for more than six decades on immunology and parasitic diseases.
Dr. David’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1955 when he graduated with his Medical Degree in 1955 from the University of Chicago School of Medicine in Illinois. After graduating, he completed his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital and then did a number of advanced training courses. In 1966, at NYU Medical School, he discovered MIF (MIgration Inhibitory Factor) the first cytokine, then cloned it. MIF, in mouse models, is critical in the pathogenesis of sepsis and autoimmunity including diabetes type 2, atherosclerosis, arthritis, and multiple sclerosis.
Dr. David is the Emeritus Richard Pearson Strong Professor of Tropical Public Health at the Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health, and was Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School. He now lives in New York. He is a worldwide authority on tropical parasitic diseases, especially leishmaniasis, and has led many important research projects. He is a distinguished member of many professional organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine and was president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He attributes his success to the support and encouragement of Roberta, his wife. In his free time, Dr. David enjoys going to concerts, theater and museums, and he is a keen pianist.
