Dr. Rex L. Mahnensmith obtained his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut in 1977. This was followed by a Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Yale New Haven Hospital from 1977 to 1980. After completing Residency Training, Dr. Mahnensmith was invited to serve as Chief Medical Resident at Yale New Haven Hospital and as Instructor in Medicine at Yale University. In these roles, Dr. Mahnensmith taught Yale Medical Students and Residents full time for 12 months. In Mid-1981, Dr. Mahnensmith transitioned into a three-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nephrology, Metabolism, and Hypertension at Yale University.
Dr. Mahnensmith became dual certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and is renowned as a leading expert in the treatment of a wide spectrum of kidney diseases and the care of persons with kidney failure, diabetes, hypertension, and various metabolic disorders. He served as Medical Director for Dialysis for over 25 years at various dialysis clinics and served on the National Board of Medical Directors for Gambro Healthcare from 2001 through 2005. He maintains professional memberships in the American Medical Association and the American Medical Director’s Association, and he has served as Professor of Internal Medicine at Duke, Brown and Yale Universities. Dr. Mahnensmith has received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and outstanding service over his career. He states that he is humbled by these awards, as he considers himself to be a “Servant-Physician” who is responding to a “Call” to be a Physician who provides medical care with holistic caring and deliberate carefulness. What he loves in his work is connecting with his patients – taking time to know each well, to listen carefully, to respond with encouragement, to make shared decisions with each patient after thorough conversations, and then maintaining close follow-up to assure best progress. He favors preventative medical care that has a natural foundation in best nutrition, best balance, positive thinking, and wellness lifestyles. He attributes his success to his faith in God, shepherding mentors, devoted and loving wife, his inclination to connect and relate to patients and families and ongoing educational opportunities. When teaching, he points out that he always emphasizes that being a Physician is a Service to people and is a “Vocation,” a “Calling,” and the Physician’s response must be humble, respectful, affirming, and caring. It is a “High Calling” he says. When not assisting patients, Dr. Mahnensmith enjoys Bible studies, writing medical articles, spending time with his family and dogs, hiking, biking, nature watching, and gardening.
