With an upcoming publication in the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare, Shirley A. Watkins, RN, MS, CCRN, APN-CNS, joins the prestigious ranks of the International Nurses Association. She is an Advanced Practice Nurse-Clinical Nurse Specialist with 34 years of experience in her field and extensive expertise in all facets of nursing, especially critical care nursing, cardiovascular nursing, and nursing education. Shirley is currently serving patients as a Nurse Educator at Shirley A. Watkins Nursing Education LLC, her own business in Chicago, Illinois. The vision of her practice is for nurse practitioners/clinical specialists/all nurses to expand their professional knowledge, level, and skill while providing care to medical/surgical and critical care patients.

Shirley’s experience includes a variety of roles, including staff nurse, nurse clinician, clinical nurse specialist, manager, director, clinical educator, CNO, and instructor. She presents nationally, has authored nursing articles, and has been a consultant for nursing associations, hospitals, and organizations. Shirley received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from The University of Illinois Chicago College of Nursing. An advocate for continuing education, she attended Saint Xavier University School of Nursing and gained her Master of Science degree. Furthermore, she is an Advanced Practice Nurse-Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Certified Critical Care Nurse, with additional certificates in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support.

An inductee of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Shirley was recognized for excellence and dedication in her profession in 2013 by the National Association of Professional Women. She stays current in the nursing field through her professional membership with the American Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the American Association for Critical Care Nursing, the National Nursing Staff Development Organization, the National Association for Clinical Nurse Specialists, the National Association for Professional Women, and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses. Shirley attributes her success to God, and her passion for nursing and education. When she is not working, her hobbies include going to the beach, crafting, and spending time with her family.
