Carolyn Reid, a high school senior and an honors student at Steinbrenner High School, is the new National American (NAM) Miss Tampa Teen.
It’s an honor Reid never really expected to receive.
It can be difficult to achieve your personal goals and dreams when you aren’t the most confident or maybe just shy.
This was Carolyn Reid throughout her early teenage years. With a friend’s suggestion and her family’s support, she signed up to take a 26 week course at John Casablanca’s Model and Talent Agency (JC) in Tampa, Fla. to help in these areas.
The course covered many topics from health and nutrition to on camera spokes model to runway. Graduating from JC in June, 2012, has truly opened many doors and opportunities.
Last June, Reid was invited to attend a Modeling Expo held in Dallas and competed in several categories and gained confidence and experience, while being judged by professional talent scouts and talent agents.
“Although I wasn’t signed with an agency at that Expo I had several agencies interested in me from Dallas, Atlanta and New York,” says Reid. “All agents said they would be more interested in working with me when I turned 18.”
Last August she was signed locally with Manikin Agency of Jacksonville, Florida.
While preparing for the National American Miss pageant this fall, Carolyn is a full-time student and working part-time for Hillsborough County as a youth counselor at a local elementary school in their aftercare program.
“I love working with young children,” says Reid. “I plan to attend Hillsborough Community College majoring in Mass Communications and Broadcasting while continuing to model and gain work experience at a local television station.”
She got the on camera “bug” while being an assistant in several news stories with her mother, Yvonne, who did a segment the last four years for WTSP/CBS in Tampa, FL called “Try It Before You Buy It.”
“Carolyn is very driven, enthusiastic and caring young lady,” says her mom, Yvonne and dad, Ronald B. Reid. “When she received the invitation to interview to be in the Tampa pageant, initially what drew her was the scholarship opportunities to assist her in paying for college but after she was crowned in February, she is equally excited about the knowledge she is gaining and the new lifelong friendships she is forming.”
Carolyn Reid plans to do her best and maybe with the support and possible sponsorship or donations from local boutiques and businesses, they can help her “find the perfect evening gown to match her smile and enthusiasm” as Carolyn puts it. She encourages all young girls to strive to make their dreams come true and when possible pursue those goals and dreams through NAM.
The National American Miss Pageant System is the largest in the nation, which a focus on creating future leaders and equipping them with real-world skills to make their dreams become a reality. The program is based on inner beauty, poise and presentation, while placing an even bigger emphasis on the interview and community service participation. NAM is unlike many other pageants as it is important that the young ladies gain self-confidence and learn new skills bringing a positive attitude to each competition.
