As workers’ rights and Right to Work legislation play a major role in politics across the nation, labor supporters in Ohio are making sure their voices are heard by offering free classes to the public.
Holding all-day classes that deal with the effects of Right to Work on wages, workers and state economies, the IUOE Local 18 labor union offers a free “Labor History” class designed to teach Ohioans about the Right to Work agenda.
“From the beginning, our primary focus has been to teach the public about the dangers of Right to Work and how possible legislation would affect their everyday lives,” said Pat Sink, Ohio’s IUOE Local 18 business manager.
The next “Labor History” class will take place just south of Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 2014, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Started in the early 1990s, the “Labor History” classes explore the wide-ranging effect that Right to Work has had on states that have enacted the legislation, both historically and recently, as well as the recent occurrences in the Right to Work fight.
Although the classes are hosted by IUOE, the union encourages all locals, non-union members and anyone else interested to attend.
“We encourage everyone to come out and educate themselves,” said Sink. “This issue is too important to leave anyone unprepared.”
Sink says the Labor History class has even attracted folks from out of state.
Opponents of the recent Ohio Right to Work efforts, of “Workplace Freedom” bills, contend that the initiative’s true purpose is to kill unions and worker protections, ultimately leading to a weaker middle class.
By stripping workers of their rights and freedoms, business owners would be free to lower worker pay, reduce worker benefits and ignore worker rights.
