Economic development organizations gather for RNC

Unprecedented collaboration sparks national attention

Tampa Bay & CompanyLeaders from 14 key Tampa Bay economic development organizations (EDOs) and community partners gathered today at Tampa International Airport to show how they’re working in concert to promote Tampa Bay to the world leading up to, during and after the 2012 Republican National Convention (RNC).

This unprecedented partnership of Tampa Bay-area EDOs, led by Tampa Bay & Company, includes a comprehensive strategic marketing campaign consisting of a national public relations initiative, hosting journalists from around the world, behind-the-scenes tours for future meeting planners and advertising in Southwest Airlines’ Spirit magazine and US Airways’ in-flight magazines, which will reach more than six million readers in the month of August. This initiative also includes having a presence in the official RNC, media center where 15,000 media will gather, and the activation of a social media command center.

In addition to comments from Chairman of the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners Ken Hagan and President/CEO of Tampa Bay & Company Kelly Miller, today’s announcement also included the unveiling of a 20-page special section about Tampa Bay in Spirit magazine.

“The RNC is an unprecedented opportunity for Hillsborough County and the entire Tampa Bay region to market and promote our destination, and we are excited to be the lead funding agency for all of these programs to leverage the RNC,” said Hagan. “This collaboration is a first for our community, and we look forward to sharing our collective messages to audiences across the globe.”

The pinnacle of this collaboration is a Social Media Command Center (SMCC) that will activate the week of the Republican National Convention. Staffed by a team of 50 social media and destination experts, the SMCC will monitor and interact on social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, using the hashtag #TampaBay

“This is our opportunity to impact the social media conversation that’s happening about Tampa Bay on a local, national and international level,” said Miller. “There will be millions of conversations on social media during the RNC, and this command center will engage, respond to and influence a significant portion of those.”

EDOs and community partners included in this unprecedented collaboration are: Tampa Bay & Company, Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation, Tampa Bay Partnership, Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Hillsborough County, Tampa Convention Center, Tampa International Airport, Tampa Port Authority, Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Westshore Alliance, Tampa Downtown Partnership, VISIT FLORIDA, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Ybor City Development Corporation.
