"To the Moon and Back: A Daughter/Mother Journey of Eating Disorder Recovery" by Meghan Anne Feran

For six years, Meghan Anne Feran had a tumultuous relationship with her body, eating and exercise. She decided she had struggled with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa for too long before checking into a 45-day inpatient treatment center in Arizona. In “To the Moon and Back: A Daughter/Mother Journey of Eating Disorder Recovery” (ISBN 146813776X), Feran and her mother Karen cover the days leading up to, during and after her treatment.

The prologue of “To the Moon and Back” describes the years before Feran decided to seek professional help for her anorexia and bulimia. She exposes eating disorders in a raw, personal light that few will have seen before. The work then shifts to journal entries that Feran and Karen penned during Feran’s treatment at the intense inpatient clinic in Arizona. The complementary journal entries allow readers to see the battle to recovery from the point of view of a mother and daughter, the patient.

Feran ends her memoir with a realistic epilogue. She details her life post-treatment, from the up and down nature of recovery to assimilating back into a normal routine outside of the safe walls of the clinic.

“I’m giving readers a personal, up-close look at my battle with eating disorders and the long road to recovery because I want the general public to have a better understanding of these disorders,” Feran says. “I want to raise awareness for eating disorders and the importance of reaching out for help. The stigma attached to anorexia and bulimia needs to go away.”

The mother-daughter duo behind “To the Moon and Back” hopes that the brutal honesty of Feran’s memoir will shed light onto a taboo topic that affects numerous men and women all over the world. Those with eating disorders, their loved ones as well as those working in the medical and nutrition fields will find the insight, emotions and experiences helpful and enlightening.
