Vme, one of America’s largest Spanish networks presented by public television, announces the Spanish broadcast premiere of “Mexico: The Royal Tour” a one-hour special featuring an in-depth, one-on-one country tour led directly by Mexico’s head-of-state. On Friday, September 23 at 9 p.m. EDT on Vme, and again on Saturday, September 24 at midnight EDT and on Sunday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. EDT , host Peter Greenberg, the Emmy Award-winning CBS News travel editor takes the viewer on a journey deep into Mexico showcasing the country through the eyes of its leader, President Felipe Calderón.
In this groundbreaking one-hour Spanish premiere, produced by Check Six Productions and WNET New York Public Media, Calderón and Greenberg travel the country from Chihuahua to Cozumel, from whale watching in Baja to rappelling 110 stories down the Cave of Swallows in San Luis Potosi. The two men zip line high above the rainforest and dive Mexico’s mysterious cenotes and underground rivers. Calderón takes Greenberg on a tour up – and then deep into the fascinating pyramids of Chichen Itza, Calakmul and Teotihuacan. They head to Palenque, where a secret stairway yields centuries-old Mayan carvings in a hidden chamber; and in the village of Metzabok, Calderón and Greenberg travel with the Lacandona, descendents of the Mayans who continue to preserve their ancient traditions in an ever-evolving country.
The program doesn’t just tour the iconic and historic sites of Mexico; it also explores many of Mexico’s unique and lesser-known sites, all of which are accessible to travelers. The tour also takes a personal turn for the President as he takes Greenberg on a surprise visit to the home where he grew up in Morelia, Michoacan and the school where he studied. Greenberg also sits down with Calderón for a frank discussion of the current state of affairs in his country, as well as the President’s war on the drug cartels.
“We’ve been given extraordinary access to both a country and its leader during a pivotal time in Mexico’s history,” says Greenberg. “While we explore many of the little-known gems of this country, President Calderón also takes me inside his state-of-the-art, top-secret security bunker and discusses the drug battle and what it really means to travelers. It’s an eye-opening, once-in-a-lifetime experience I get to share with viewers.”
