The world is ever changing. Thus are all the fields that we work in. In order to magnify your skills as a PR practitioner, you need to stay informed, well-versed and up to date. Social media whether you like it or not isn’t going anywhere. You can have it in your mind that you have no desire at all to actually work with social media after graduation; but you should be realistic that this is the world that we live in and the culture has been defined by it on a global level.

One of the newest trends that are taking over social media is “Pinterest”. It is a vision-board-styled social photo sharing website. (Yes that is a mouthful!) It is unique and primarily a first of its kind. It is definitely the next big thing and it has already begun giving Facebook, the current leading social network, some competition (I think).

Aside from already being tapped into the other social outlets, Facebook, Twitter, and FourSquare; we now have a new ‘big one’. This will without a doubt be a platform for Public Relations, because as it grows I think it will be inevitable that brands will become extremely intertwined with the ability it provides to engage the audiences. In fact, Nordstrom was one of the first major brands that were linked into the potential of Pinterest.  According to banyanbranch.com Nordstrom used Pinterest to see what trends and styles the community likes based on engagement – likes, comments and repins.

This will be a great tool for campaigns and consumer engagement for PR, marketing and advertising of all levels.

Unsolicited advice from me to you day 11: See if you have the skills to create a mobile app. I personally am not that tech-savvy, however I wish I was. The way that mobile apps are becoming such a big part of our environment if you have that as a tool under your belt that will make you a little bit more desirable for employers in the future. Don’t be the average intern – be the next great intern!
