In the upcoming football match-up between Michigan State University (MSU) and Central Michigan University (CMU) this Saturday, September 8, there’s even more at stake than the competition on the field. Fans of both teams will gather early on game day for tailgating and socializing in CMU’s hometown of Mount Pleasant, where they will compete to see who can recycle the most.
Recycling collection services will be in place and promoted through the efforts of university recycling coordinators, who will be assisted by legions of student volunteers throughout both school’s designated tailgating lots. Recycling is an especially important issue for CMU, as the population of Mt. Pleasant will double on game day, resulting in potentially enormous amounts of trash. With CMU’s strong commitment to recycling, they chose to meet the issue head-on.
Schupan Recycling and Waste Management were the chosen partners to consult on the recycling strategy for game day, and the competition was born.
“Over 500 recycling containers will be placed throughout Mt. Pleasant, one for each trash container. We will be tracking the volume of materials collected in the tailgate areas before the kickoff and announcing the recycling competition winner at halftime,” says Roger Cargill of Schupan Recycling.
The winning team will receive a custom-made recyclable plastic and aluminum trophy. One hundred student volunteers from both CMU and MSU will be present with buttons, signs and bags to help promote the recycling competition. With crowds numbering 70,000 anticipated on game day, the combined effort is expected to collect and recycle over 1,500 pounds of aluminum and plastic beverage containers.
