Girls Inc logoHave you ever wondered what it would be like to be a famous woman in history?  Maybe Anne Lindbergh or Marie Curie piques your curiosity, or maybe it’s Margaret Meade or Dr. Sally Ride.  How did they live?  What were their daily lives like?  What were their thoughts, their fears, their goals?  What obstacles did they overcome?  Who were they really?  What can we learn from them for our lives today?

Through “Women in History Come Alive,” a unique program at Girls Inc of Pinellas, girls will have an incomparable opportunity to explore those questions and more.   March is Women’s History Month and this year’s “Outstanding Women in History Come Alive” begins March 13th and continues through May 22nd.  Volunteer mentors will assist girls in choosing and researching a woman who has made an impact on history.  Mentors will then help each girl design a costume and a 5 minute presentation for our annual Famous Women in History Tribute on May 22nd where these women will “come alive” with the girls giving performances in character in front of family, friends and the community.

Girls Inc is currently recruiting 25 enthusiastic mentors to share this exciting experience with our girls.  Mentoring requires a time commitment of approximately 12 hours total during the months of March, April and May with each mentor working with one girl.   Come and be a part of history!  Mentors come from throughout our community, including college students, business professionals, retirees, entrepreneurs and civic leaders.  It’s a rewarding experience for mentors and helps fire up young girl’s imaginations, develops their research skills, poise, and leadership abilities.  The mentors’ orientation meeting is Thursday March 6th from 4-6 pm in the Girls Inc. library.  Please contact Sue Olsen at 544-6230 x112 if you are interested in participating.

For over half a century, Girls Inc has had a profound and life-changing impact for thousands of girls in Pinellas County and is known as the “go-to place” for growing great girls.   The Girls Inc After-School Enrichment Program and Operation SMART Summer Camp help today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders by helping them develop the tools to build, and the vision to plan their very best futures.
