Captivating film ‘Sugar’ depicts the struggles of homeless youth in America.

After successful screenings at the Manhattan Film Festival in New York, Vancouver’s Homelessness Action Week and in front of members of Congress, the Elliott Broidy produced film, “Sugar,” is set to premiere in the nation’s capital next month  in front of a who’s who of VIP constituents.

The premiere is being co-sponsored by the USICH, National Coalition for the Homeless, National Network for Youth, National Law Center on Homelessness, National Alliance to End Homelessness and the Sasha Bruce Youthwork.

“It’s only fitting that we premiere this powerful film in Washington D.C.,” said philanthropist Elliott Broidy, executive producer of “Sugar.” “The opportunity to spotlight an issue of this magnitude in front of some of the country’s most influential people is one we could not pass up.”

Called “one of those rare films that makes you angry, engaged and motivated to take action,” by Jerry Jones, the Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless in Washington D.C., “Sugar” is designed to inspire people to change the way they act and look at a youth homelessness crisis that has grown into a nationwide issue.

“Sugar” is set to be released on Thursday, November 14 at the West End Cinema in Washington, D.C.

Based on true events, “Sugar” follows the story of a young girl with a troubled past who ends up on the streets of Venice Beach and Hollywood, California after her family dies in a tragic car accident.

Originally conceived as a way to change lives and help thousands of homeless youths beat the odds, “Sugar” has become a dream come true for the movie’s director, Rotimi Rainwater. The story is based on a nightmare Rainwater experienced as he was forced into a life on the streets after leaving the U.S. Navy.

Taking a realistic look at what forces youths onto the streets, “Sugar” was created specifically to spotlight the issue of homelessness among children while using its platform as a way to help get children off the streets.

“This film is about more than just entertaining the audience,” said executive producer Elliott Broidy. “A humanitarian effort of this scope doesn’t just need to succeed, it deserves to.”

A Los Angeles-based film fund manager and philanthropist, Elliott Broidy has thrown his full support behind the film. Through his participation on the Council of Guardians of Aviva Family and Children’s Services for the last 15 years, Broidy has become keenly aware of the horrors facing children living on the streets and what it means for everyone if communities do not come together.

“Sugar” stars Shenae Grimes (Empire State, DeGrassi, 90210), Marshall Allman (Hostage, True Blood, Prison Break) and Corbin Bleu (High School Musical, One Life to Live) and is set to release this fall.
