Hillel Academy integrates Flight School for aerial photography drone into MakerLab curriculum

(PR NewsChannel) / November 18, 2014 / TAMPA, Fla.

Hillel Academy TampaHillel Academy, Tampa Bay’s premier community day school, is proud to announce an expansion of their MakerLab middle school curriculum to include the creation of a Flight School for the school’s new aerial photography drone. The Hillel Academy drone is a Phantom DJI Vision 2 Plus manufactured by DJI.

Under the direction of IT teacher Michael Gamson, groups of 4 students at a time attend Flight School in order to learn to assemble the drone, perform a series of pre-flight procedures and fly the drone at incrementally higher altitudes. They begin by flying the drone as low as 10 feet above the ground and advance to flying it more than 50 feet high. They fly the drone further and further away in order to capture the perfect 360 degree video. After mastering the process, each student will take a drone certification test. As the students become certified, others will be invited to train on the drone’s operation.

The Hillel Academy aerial photography drone has also been used to photograph soccer games and it helped the third grade students conduct a search & rescue mission in Hillel Academy’s back field as part of their maps and geography lessons.
