Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman spoke with Stacie Schaible of Tampa’s NBC-affiliate WFLA earlier this week to discuss a recent article stating Americans “over-bathe.”

According to the article, originally posted by BuzzFeed, showering too often “can dry out and irritate skin,” ultimately doing more harm than good.

During the WFLA segment, which aired Wednesday, Jan. 21, not only did Dr. Forman still recommend a daily shower, he also suggested to dial back the hot water.

“[Hot showers] remove essential things you actually need in your skin,” the Tampa dermatologist told WFLA. “You can take a lukewarm shower. It’s really important to keep your skin nice and moist.”

Dr. Forman suggests using lotion immediately after each shower to lock in moisture, preventing skin cracking and other skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema.

The Tampa dermatologist adds that hot showers can deflate necessary oils from the skin, as well as needed fats in the skin to keep it intact.
