Hillsborough RegattaThe Hillsborough River has been a popular rowing spot for decades, with local and out-of-town teams enjoying downtown Tampa’s waterway as a place to train and race.

This fall, residents and visitors are invited to take part in Tampa Bay’s tradition of rowing Oct. 10-11 at the Head of the Hillsborough Rowing & Paddling Regatta Festival, featuring a time-trial rowing competition and a race for paddle boards, kayaks and dragon boats.

“The Head of the Hillsborough is a great opportunity for our community to experience the sport of rowing,” said Tom Feaster, a director of the U.S. Rowing Association and president of The Stewards Foundation, a rowing advocacy foundation in Tampa that supports youth rowing teams. “A lot of people in Tampa Bay have seen rowers out on the Hillsborough River, but they have never actually watched them compete.”

Admission to the festival is free at Marjorie Park on Davis Islands, 39 Columbia Drive, where spectators can watch as high school, college and club rowing teams will race along the Seddon Channel. The festival will include local food truck vendors, cash bars, games and live entertainment.

Reserved seating is available in advance in the Stewards’ Club for $85, which includes a brunch buffet and open bar, with ticket sales benefitting The Stewards Foundation.

The Head of the Hillsborough weekend schedule:

  • Oct. 10, opening ceremony at Marjorie Park at 6 p.m.
  • Oct. 11, rowing competition from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Oct. 11, race for paddle boards, kayaks and dragon boats from noon – 4 p.m.
