Team Surf Dog Booker D.Booker D. Surfdog, the East Coast Dog Surfing Champion, considered by some to be the “Kelly Slater of canines” has completed her training for a “Retake the West Coast Tour” and is set to for a historic day at New Smyrna Beach.

Poised to become the first canine ever to surf the beach, Booker D’s history making feat will take place at the Gnarly Charley Surf Series being held Saturday, September 6, from 9-10 a.m.

After a long heartfelt discussion with her owner Adam Steinberg, founder of the East Coast Dog Surfing Association and creator of the Florida International Dog Surfing Championship, Booker D “made the decision” to come out of semi-retirement in balmy Florida. She is now firing on all cylinders as the countdown to the Unleashed by Petco Surf City Surf Dog Competition in Huntington Beach, Calif. September 26-28 begins.

“Obviously Booker D can’t talk but I feel that if she could she’d tell me ‘I’m going to eat a wave and then I’m going to eat the Huntington Beach pier for lunch,” said Steinberg. “After I’m done wiping up the beaches in Southern California I’ll head back to Florida and re-consider retirement.”

With New Smyrna Beach being the shark bite capital of America, safety is always a concern for Booker and Team Surfdog. Dog surfing is not for the squeamish, state laws, local regulations and surf community mores must be adhered to at all times. Booker D. advises taking classes, using a soft board and common sense for anyone venturing into this extreme sport.

The nine year old All-American, bodacious bad girl of the surf dog world, who seems at home breaking everything in a china shop, or shredding the Pipeline, has made her mark competitively surfing breaks in Cocoa Beach and Virginia Beach previously.

Her involvement with surfing started seemingly from the day she was born. A shoebox and a reservoir in Arizona found Booker D floating down the water and Steinberg says she’s been shredding the shoreline ever since.

Along with her trusty companion Onyx Shorepound Surfdog, her quiver, stocked short boards and long boards is prepared for any wave. Her favorite board, Warbird, looks like an old school ‘fish’, and was hand crafted in downtown Cocoa Beach, at Slater Surf & Tackle.

Booker D. Surfdog will be stopping at Unleashed by Petco Retail stores in Texas and California, on her cross country journey.
