Delta LabsAn eye opening new study performed by the Norwegian Institute of Public Health has found that women who take folic acid before conception and early in pregnancy face a significantly reduced rate of children born with autistic disorders.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that of the 85,176 babies observed between 2002 and 2008, only two hundred and seventy cases of autism spectrum disorders were identified, or about one out of every 315 births.

This number is more than triple the approximately one in 100 children rate of autism cases reported in the United States in 2007, a rate that has steadily increased over the past decade.

The study also found that women who took folic acid supplements early in their pregnancy were forty percent less likely to have children with autism.

With the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announcing last week that a new survey of parents shows that 1 in 50 U.S. school children have some sort of autism, the focus on prevention is becoming ever more important.

Folic acid, an important B vitamin, is necessary for DNA synthesis and repairs, and is known to protect against spina bifida and other birth defects related to the brain and spinal cord. According to the Norwegian researchers, the protection now seems to include autism.

The Department of Health recommends women trying to conceive, and those within their first trimester, to consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of Folic Acid every day.

Women’s health and wellness company, Delta Labs, has used folic acid as an essential element in their Prenatal Multivitamin since the beginning.

“We’ve placed a strong emphasis on the importance of folic acid,” said Debbie Morgan, President of Delta Labs. “As more and more research comes to light, it’s becoming exceedingly apparent that a folic acid supplement is a must for every pregnancy.”

Delta Lab’s prenatal supplements provide more than enough folic acid in each capsule to meet the suggested daily intake.  An all-natural and gluten free formula, the prenatal multivitamin provides a wealth of other nutrients that are vital to the healthy development of a baby, including—iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C.

Specially formulated to be easy to swallow and gentle on the stomach, Delta Lab’s Prenatal Multivitamin offers added benefits for expectant mothers struggling with morning sickness or nausea, two common issues during pregnancy.

In order to receive the full benefits of the supplement, however, women must begin their folic acid regimen as early as four weeks before conception, and maintain their intake as long as eight weeks after becoming pregnant. Scientists warn that timing is critical when beginning a folic acid supplement, and many women began taking it much later than recommended.

The American Pregnancy Association cautions against expectant mothers consuming inappropriate amounts of synthetic vitamins due to increased health risks. Guaranteed to be safe, natural, and doctor recommended, the Prenatal Multivitamin is carefully crafted from the best vitamins and minerals in order to make it the perfect choice for women as well as their babies.

“Our top priority has always been the health of the women who use our products,” said Morgan, “It is a great feeling to provide the products and the knowledge that can help new mothers maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
