Dr. Seth Forman weighs in on the connection between acne and psychiatric disorders that can last into middle age

Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman supports a new study suggesting acne’s association with elevated rates of anxiety lasting last well into adulthood.

“Over the years there have been several studies that have shown a connection between acne and psychological stress,” said Forman. “What makes this study so unique is that it offers special data that examines both acne and psychology from puberty to middle age.”

Participants ranging from adolescence to adulthood were examined with the purpose of determining whether or not the skin condition was linked to psychiatric disorders and if it persisted beyond the adolescence period.

The study found that depression rates were higher among participants with acne and those participants were almost one and a half times more likely to suffer from anxiety than those without.

“Sufferers of acne are susceptible to feeling insecurities during teenage years,” said the Tampa dermatologist. “It’s reasonable to say that the emotional impact is so significant that it can affect people later in life.”

The Tampa dermatologist says that the best way to manage the emotional effects of acne is by taking care of yourself.

“If acne is something you struggle with on a daily basis, find out more information from your dermatologist,” says Dr. Forman. “More often than not, it goes beyond washing your face. You can see a dramatic change in your skin just by changing your diet and daily routine, or for the stubborn moderate and severe cases, the right prescription from your doctor.”
