Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman is encouraged by a new study that was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute on January 20, revealing that drinking coffee can prevent people from getting the most dangerous form of skin cancer, melanoma.

The report concluded that drinking more than an average of four cups of coffee a day gave people a 20% reduced risk of developing melanoma over a span of 10 years.

“This is an important discovery that could lead to future developments in treating skin cancer,” said the Tampa dermatologist. “This certainly doesn’t mean people should be soaking up the sun and UV rays unprotected however; they still present great risks.”

According to the Skin Care Foundation, melanoma develops when unrepaired damage to skin cells, mainly from UV exposure, causes a mutation that leads cells to multiply and form tumors in the basal layer of the epidermis. Melanomas are characterized as mole-like, black or brown spots in the skin and are caused due to intense, UV exposure.

The research team based their evidence off of information they gathered from more than 447,000 people enrolled in the study who answered a 124-item food questionnaire. Researchers were also allowed access to their medical records and food and cancer information.

“I wouldn’t increase your coffee consumption based off this report,” said Dr. Forman. “It’s an encouraging medical discovery, but if you’re really concerned about developing melanoma skin cancer, protect yourself from the sun with sunblock and protective clothing outside.”

The Tampa dermatologist recommends a broad spectrum sunblock with a SPF of 30 or better.

Dr. Forman is the founder of Forman Dermatology and Skin institute, located in Tampa, Fla. and has appeared on TV shows across the country, including the nationally syndicated show “The Doctors” to provide sun-protection tips and to demonstrate his breakthrough skin cancer treatments.
