Tampa dermatologist Forman dermatology and skin cancer instituteTampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman is backing a statement made earlier this week by acting U.S. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak, calling skin cancer “a major health problem that requires immediate action.”

While different forms of cancer are decreasing, skin cancer diagnoses have tripled in the past three decades, as reported by the Washington Post.

“Skin cancer, and in particular melanoma, is a serious health concern that needs to be addressed,” says Dr. Forman. “More and more of my new patients are coming to me with some form of skin cancer, and it seems like they are getting younger by the year.”

According to the new report from the U.S. Surgeon General, on average, 63,000 new cases of melanoma, skin cancer’s deadliest form, are diagnosed each year, resulting in roughly 9,000 deaths.

The Tampa Dermatologist believes the astonishing numbers are the consequence of a couple factors.

“For one, as the indoor tanning industry has grown, so has the number of skin cancer diagnoses, it is unnecessary ultraviolet radiation your skin is being exposed to,” says Dr. Forman.

Indoor tanning is the known cause for approximately 400,000 cases of skin cancer as per the newly released report.

Another major risk, according to the Tampa dermatologist, is not protecting your skin outside with SPF. Individuals, especially those with fair skin, should be using at least SPF 30 sunscreen that offers both UVA and UVB protection.

“A person’s skin can be damaged in as little as 15 minutes by UV rays,” adds Dr. Forman.

“The numbers are not lying, skin cancer is a major health concern and is growing fiercer by the day. Individuals need to be proactive and take care of their skin before they become part of the growing statistic.”
