Top lobbyist Jack Burkman says he’s working on a bill to ban gays in the NFL
Jack Burkman, a top D.C. lobbyist who’s pushing draft legislation that would ban openly gay players from the NFL, blasted the endorsement deal signed by Michael Sam, who has yet to be drafted by the NFL, but is in line to become the first openly gay football player.
Yesterday, Burkman threatened to arrange a massive boycott of the team that drafts Sam. He says he has a coalition of Evangelical leaders ready in most states preparing to join in. Today he called on those leaders to boycott Visa.
“Visa’s decision to hire Michael Sam as a celebrity endorser is both sad and terrible,” says Burkman. “Visa hired Sam simply because he is gay and the company now openly seeks to align itself with the gay movement nationally.
Burkman adds: “It would be one thing if Sam were a star NFL football player who just happened to be gay. But he has yet to even make a team and Visa has already plunged in.”
Burkman is pushing The American Decency Act of 2014 which would ban openly gay players from the NFL and other professional sports.
“Christians everywhere–in the US and abroad–shall be called upon to stop making any purchases with cards bearing the Visa logo,” says Burkman. “Merchants shall be called upon to stop accepting cards bearing the Visa logo. Visa is bold, unafraid. But this will change quickly as the company learns the full financial power of the Christian community.”
Visa has been the exclusive payment services sponsor of the NFL since 1995.
