Jazz fans can keep it green

Schupan Recycling provides event recycling expertise to the Detroit Jazz Festival
(PR NewsChannel) / August 13, 2013 / KALAMAZOO, Mich.

Schupan recyclingThe Detroit Jazz Festival continues its greening efforts for the fifth consecutive year with the support of the DTE Energy Foundation’s Greening of the Detroit Jazz Festival program, which aims to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

It is expected that the Greening Program will collect and recycle more than 10 tons of waste throughout the Jazz Festival, being held over Labor Day weekend in downtown Detroit. Last year, the program recycled 85 percent of the 5.2 tons of waste collected, a significant increase from 2011.

This year, Schupan Recycling – a 45-year-old company based in Kalamazoo who manages the processing of the majority of Michigan’s deposit beverage containers – is joining in the efforts to manage onsite sorting and grow the Festival’s greening initiative by ensuring all material is recycled properly. Schupan brings six years of event recycling experience to over 8.8 million event attendees.

In addition to the onsite sorting, Schupan will coordinate a volunteer group of more than 50 who will promote the festival’s recycling stations for plastic, aluminum, glass and cardboard waste.

Greening volunteers will also inform festival attendees about the energy savings of recycling, Michigan’s highly successful beverage container recycling and the resulting industry growth and job creation from the beverage container deposit system.

Additional Greening Program efforts of the Detroit Jazz Festival include:

•           Shuttle service that will carry Festival attendees from neighboring Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, saving thousands of vehicle miles.
•           Digital artist application process, saving paper previously used for hundreds of artist packets
•           Using paperless alternatives such as mobile applications, text messaging and email
•           Providing festival staff and volunteers with reusable coolers instead of single-use water bottles.
•           Usage of compostable cups and plates for all catered food at the Festival
