Looking to put hunger on the ropes once and for all, Yank Barry and the Global Village Champions Foundation are pleased to announce the addition of even more knockout power to the foundation’s already impressive list of champion.
Highlighted by boxing legend and celebrity Mike “Iron Mike” Tyson, the new batch of Global Village Champions include two-time heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe, three-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer, welterweight, middleweight, and light heavyweight champion Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns and legendary puncher Earnie Shavers.
“This is exactly the kind of power we need to knock out world hunger,” says Barry, founder of the Global Village Champions Foundation.
The recent signings bolster Global Village Champions’ impressive boxing pedigree which already included undisputed heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, former champion and 90’s “Fighter of the Decade” Roy Jones Jr., three-division world champion boxer Juan Manuel Marquez, four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield and boxing powerhouse and champion Manny Pacquiáo.
Founded in 1995 by Barry and longtime friend and boxing legend Muhammad Ali, Global Village Champions Foundation was created with the mission to feed the hungry and provide humanitarian relief. Since then, the foundation has delivered over 925,000,000 meals to the hungry around the world.
The foundation includes a star-studded list of champions that includes Celine Dion, Michael Jordan, Buzz Aldrin and King Mohammed VI of Morocco, among others.
“It’s wonderful that we were able to partner with these amazing individuals to eradicate hunger,” says Nobel Peace Prize nominee Barry. “Not only are they legends of boxing, but they also have some of the biggest hearts I’ve had the pleasure of coming across.”
Former lead singer of the rock n’ roll band The Kingsmen, Barry has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in the fight against world hunger. His most recent nomination comes from champion boxer and current elected politician in the Philippines, Pacquiáo and Gov. Chavit Singson, also from the Philippines.
As a result of his ongoing fight against hunger, Barry has received nearly two dozen awards since 1995, highlighted by the Gusi Peace Prize for Social Services, Philanthropy, and International Humanitarianism in Manila, the India Humanitarian Service Award and the Bahamian Red Cross Humanitarian Award.
Barry and Lennox Lewis will be in Jamaica in May, feeding orphans and furthering the fight against hunger.
