ePub-coverWhen award-winning author William H. Coles reads contemporary fiction, he recognizes many of today’s authors omit a significant element in every great story: character development.

To Coles, it is the characters that drive the storyline and plots. With his critically acclaimed fourth novel “Guardian of Deceit,” Coles demonstrates his remarkable aptitude for developing characters.

A finalist in the 2011 and 2012 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition, “Guardian of Deceit” is a mix of character development, dramatic plots, conflict and sophisticated story narration.

The tale concerns Darwin Hastings, a gifted teen-aged orphan who dreams of becoming a doctor, transplanting from Pittsburgh to New York to live with his new guardian, a wealthy professional football player. There he is surrounded by a host of misfits, greedy cheats and violent avengers disrupting his career aspirations. With each encounter, Darwin is pulled in another direction, encouraging the reader to imagine the path Darwin ultimately decides to follow.

“Great literary fiction is generated by imagining and creating not remembering and describing,” says Coles. “Imagination is what drives a story and that is what I hope readers enjoy most in this new novel.”

Prior to his career as an author, Coles received a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University, graduated from Emory University School of Medicine and completed a postdoctoral MS degree in neurophysiology at Louisiana State University. During his 27-year medical career, Coles specialized in ocular trauma and held academic positions as a professor at Emory University School of Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina, Louisiana State University and as a Chairman of Ophthalmology at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

While he was a professor, Coles began writing and publishing poetry. He became intrigued by the different styles of storytelling and was particularly fascinated with the way in which stories carry meaning in American culture and demonstrate how people approach life.

“I felt that the way people approach life’s conflicts is a really important aspect of storytelling. This is done through character development,” said Coles. “The plots are character-based in the sense that it’s the characters’ abilities and actions that drive plot decisions and what happens in the plot.”

“Guardian of Deceit” is currently available at Amazon, Kindle, online and in audio book.  Please visit Story in Literary Fiction for more information on William H. Coles and his work.
