June 28, 2007 - The fact that seniors generally slow down and feel sluggish may have nothing to do with aging but rather with a deficiency of vitamin D, suggests a new Dutch study.

Nearly half of the nearly 1,000 seniors who were part of this study, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, were found to be vitamin D deficient. These deficiencies, the study concluded, “are associated with poorer physical performance and a greater decline in physical performance in older men and women.”

According to Julian Whitaker, MD, director of the Whitaker Wellness Institute and president of the Freedom of Health Foundation, “Vitamin D is like Rodney Dangerfield.  It gets no respect. Yet research continues to reveal more and more benefits of this vitamin for a wide variety of health conditions.”

In addition to protecting against age-associated physical decline, supplemental vitamin D has also been shown in clinical trials to prevent bone loss, boost immune function, and protect against flu, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.

Dr. Whitaker stressed the need for doctors and other health care professionals to make a greater effort to inform patients of all ages about the benefits of vitamin D and the consequences of not taking enough of it.
