Dr. Paul Tibbits, Deputy CIO for Architecture, Strategy and Design, Va. delivered the keynote ‘Reduce Spending while Enhancing Information Protection,’ which discussed how agencies can navigate the current fiscal climate without compromising security.
Research conducted by GTRA determined that insufficient funding and being asked to ‘do more with less’ was the number one issue among IT executives, with specific concern on how this trend would impact cyber security.
“There is plenty of opportunity for stretching limited budget in information protection,” said Tibbits. “Looking for savings is hard work but it is still possible to maintain and enhance security”.
A panel of senior federal and state leaders discussed the important role innovation plays during times of fiscal uncertainty which was led by Larry Hale, director of Strategic Solutions & Security Services ITS, GSA, Vaughn Noga, CTO & director of Office of Technology Operations and Planning, EPA, Phil Wenger, deputy policy lead, Budget Line of Business, OMB, and Erik Avakian, CISO, Commonwealth of Pa.
“Without doubt, the single biggest worry keeping executives up at night is what their 2012 and 2013 budgets will look like and how they will continue to service their agencies and the citizens with reduced resources,” said Parham Eftekhari, cofounder and director of research at GTRA.
Industry thought leaders also shared their perspectives on how industry and government collaboration can help improve security while minimizing costs. The panelists discussed ‘Leveraging Industry/Government Partnerships to Reduce Costs while Improving your Security Posture,’ which included David McNeely, director of product management, Centrify, David Lingenfelter, security officer of MaaS360 by Fiberlink, Rob Roy, CTO Federal, Fortify/HP, Andy Thurai, chief architect, Intel, and Chris Poulin, CSO, Q1 Labs.
