Seth Rich, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) staffer who was killed nearly one year ago after being shot in the back twice in the wee hours of the morning in his own neighborhood, was targeted, says the independent, nonpartisan, THE PROFILING PROJECT, and not the victim of a “random robbery” as D.C. police detectives have long claimed.
That bombshell today from THE PROFILING PROJECT, which released its comprehensive report The Profiling Project: Seth Rich Homicide Initial Findings at a news conference in Arlington, Virginia stops short, however, of being able to name who killed Rich.
After a comprehensive three-month review and investigation into the death of Seth Rich, the Profiling Project notes the following:
- Seth Rich’s death does not appear to be a random homicide
- Seth Rich’s death does not appear to be a robbery gone bad
- Seth Rich’s death was more likely committed by a hired killer or serial murderer
- There may be additional video surveillance of the crime and crime scene
- The resolution of prosecuting the individual(s) responsible appears to be hindered both actively and passively
- Seth’s killer(s) most likely remain free within the community
Rich, 27, was set to move to New York to work on the Hillary Clinton campaign when he was mysteriously shot near his Bloomingdale home.
“It is highly unlikely this crime was a random homicide,” says Kevin Doherty, chief investigator at THE PROFILING PROJECT. “We’re following the evidence and clues wherever they take us. We’re after the truth.
“We hope that this report not only helps find Seth’s killer, but also spurs discussions about crime in the District. We look forward to continuing our investigation in hopes of a resolution.”
THE PROFILING PROJECT is funded by Jack Burkman, a lawyer and D.C. lobbyist who met Rich’s parents and offered to help find who killed their son. The crime, Burkman said, said the D.C. political community hard. Burkman has offered a $105,000 reward in the case.
The unsolved murder has given rise to all sorts of theories, many of which THE PROFILING PROJECT investigated.
There are no known suspects and the police investigation appears stalled.
“I promised Seth’s parents and the community that I would do everything that I could to find who killed Seth and get to the truth of what happened,” says Burkman. “There have been a lot of conjecture and theories. I enabled THE PROFILING PROJECT to investigate independently, comb through the evidence they can obtain and do what I can to help them obtain what isn’t currently available. I am so pleased at what they’ve been able to validate and discard so far.”
Last month, Burkman sued the police department for access to evidence that is not currently public which could help THE PROFILING PROJECT answer more questions.
THE PROFILING PROJECT has been run independently of Burkman, a GOP lobbyist, or his office. It has been led by Doherty and staffed by volunteer graduate students from George Washington University pursuing an advanced degree in Forensic Psychology.
Bankrolled by Burkman, THE PROFILING PROJECT team has dedicated office space at an undisclosed location in Arlington and will continue to investigate the crime for the indefinite future.
“I will continue to do whatever I can to enable the Project to continue its fine work,” says Burkman. “They are seeking answers and justice and I believe they will get there.”
