Noted Nurse Jo Ellen Rust, RN, BSN, MSN, CNS, will be Announced in the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare

iahcp_com-2With an upcoming publication in the Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare, Jo Ellen Rust, RN, BSN, MSN, CNS, joins the prestigious ranks of the International Nurses Association. Jo Ellen is a registered nurse with 40 years of experience in her field and an extensive expertise in all facets of nursing, especially acute care, intensive care, neurology nursing, and pediatric nursing. Jo Ellen is currently serving patients as Clinical Nurse Specialist for children with complex health care needs at Riley Hospital for Children in the IU Health Riley Circle of Care Program in Indianapolis, Indiana. She also supports 3 inpatient medical surgical units at the tertiary/quaternary acute care hospital for children. She supports staff in the use of safe handling equipment and the prevention of falls.  Riley is a Magnet designated hospital, and Jo Ellen was instrumental in the initial application. She serves as an adjunct professor at the Indiana University School of Nursing and precepts Clinical Nurse Specialist graduate students.

Jo Ellen attended Ball State University School of Nursing in Muncie, Indiana, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 1976. She was admitted and graduated as a student in the university’s Honors Program, graduating magna cum laude. An advocate for continuing education, she went on to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and completed her Master of Science degree in nursing with a pediatric clinical nurse specialist concentration in 1985. Jo Ellen credits her success to her nursing mentors at the beginning of her career, colleagues in nursing that have supported her practice throughout the years, and most of all, what her parents have taught her. Additionally, she maintains professional memberships with the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Indiana State Nurses Association, the Central Indiana Organization of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CIO-CNS) and the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). She participated for many years in the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the local Indiana chapter. Jo Ellen was a manuscript reviewer for their official publication, the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing.

Jo Ellen was one of the first members of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, and has been active in the organization since its inception. Jo Ellen served as a past charter board member, past board secretary, past president elect, past president and past immediate past president. Furthermore, she is currently a director at large board member of the National Association. She served as a past member and chair of the Legislative Regulatory Committee in which she completed a 50 state review of current legislation and regulation for Clinical Nurse Specialists. As a contributing member of the CNS Practice Committee, she co-authored the 2004 revision of the NACNS Statement on Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice and Education. She represented the NACNS in the development of the ANA Standards for Genetics and Genomic Nursing. Jo Ellen contributed a chapter in a book called Foundations of Clinical Nurse Specialist Practice in 2014, which was designated the 2014 AJN Book of the Year Award Winner in Advanced Practice Nursing. She served as the CNS Profile column editor for the Clinical Nurse Specialist: Journal for Advanced Practice Nursing. When she is not caring for patients, Jo Ellen dedicates her free time to her favorite activities, which include reading, sewing, playing golf, traveling, and quilting.
