"A Walk in my Moccasins" by Dr. Justus Peters

Like most, Dr. Justus Peters knows it took a lot to get him where he is today. In “A Walk in My Moccasins: Memoirs of a Deaf Physician” (ISBN 1470007053), he highlights how he discovered he was deaf and how his condition played out as he went on to obtain a medical degree.

In the beginning, Peters takes readers back to his childhood as he struggles to understand the easiest of tasks and commands. All he can think is why does everyone around him seem to be whispering. As his frustration grows to shame, Peters takes to memorizing how the tongue, lips and teeth look as they make different sounds. When he is able to hear anything, it shocks him, especially when it involves his father’s screams. Right by his side is his mother who always reassures him that everything is going to be okay.

Peters credits this motherly love and guidance as the vote of confidence that kept him going when things grew difficult. Eventually, he went on to earn his medical degree and train at various hospitals across Texas. Now a successful family practitioner, Peters knows that he wouldn’t have been able to survive any of his life’s trials if it weren’t for his persistence and his mother’s unwavering support.

“I pray that ‘A Walk in My Moccasins’ gives others the hope to continue on with their dreams,” Peters says. “I’ve been blessed to experience firsthand that having a disability does not limit your chance for success in America. I want to give something back to a society that gave me the chance to succeed and achieve my dreams.”

Peters hopes that his memoir inspires, comforts and supports readers as they work toward their personal dreams, regardless of whether or not they have a disability. Having achieved his dreams, the family physician knows the impossible is always possible with a little dedication, hard work and support.
