Last Rites

"Last Rites" by Karl Vincent

Karl Vincent is a reluctant vampire hunter who is afraid of the dark and the very sight of bloodsuckers makes him wet his pants. Yet in “Last Rites: The Return of Sebastian Vasilis” (ISBN 1448666503), a new novel by Kevin R. Given, the former detective will have to take on vampires who are plotting to reincarnate some of the most fearsome gods of the world’s most ancient religions.

Vincent’s vampire hunting has never endeared him to his family. On career day at his son’s school, he makes a laughing stock of himself when he announces to class that he was quitting his day job to hunt vampires. He even lost an ex-wife over his avocation. Yet when Vincent learns the fearsome Hebrew demon Lilith has been resurrected and there is a plot to resurrect Egyptian Sekhmet and the Hindu Kali, he realizes he must build a crack team of vampire hunters to battle the forces of darkness.

The most unlikely member of his alliance is Sebastian Vasilis, a vampire that Karl hunted and killed four years ago. Now, as a ghost, he has returned with friendly overtures, warning Karl of the plot and professing his desire to help Karl regain his soul and eternal salvation. Together, Sebastian and Karl recruit a team of vampire hunters that include ninjas, immortals, time travelers and former President Lyndon B. Johnson who was turned into a vampire, albeit a friendly one, the day before his mortal death.

Little does Karl know that Sebastian secretly plots another course of events that will put his soul back in a vampire’s body. Meanwhile, the circle of vampire hunters has headed to Calcutta to stop a ritual which will resurrect Kali. In India, Lyndon Johnson is killed by vampires, and the rest of the heroic hunters must fend off vombies, vampire-zombie hybrids.

Fans of offbeat comedies and the horror genre will be glued to every page as Karl works to defeat this viper’s nest of supernatural beings and end the ritual before it’s too late. Given believes his screwball horror story is sure to appeal to fans of 1980s cult film “The Lost Boys” and HBO’s “True Blood.”
