Los Angeles Divorce Attorney Christopher C. Melcher Explains Valentine's Day Effect

It’s not just florists, jewelers, restaurants, Hallmark and chocolate shops that make money on Valentine’s Day. Los Angeles divorce attorney Christopher C. Melcher claims he and fellow divorce attorneys see a spike in marital splits on the holiday dedicated to love.

According to Avvo.com, a site offering ratings and profiles for lawyers, the rate of divorce filings increases about 40-percent around Valentine’s Day. While it’s a time to celebrate relationships and love, more couples find themselves falling out of love and heading towards divorce court. This phenomenon has been called the “Valentine’s Effect.”

“Perhaps it’s because Valentine’s Day is the one day a year that we focus on our romantic relationships,” the Los Angeles divorce attorney says. “When our expectations don’t match up with reality, we protest. What a more dramatic day than Valentine’s Day to make those feelings known.”

Melcher also cites infidelity as another reason behind the high number of Valentine’s Day divorces. If someone else is in the picture, it can become apparent on Valentine’s Day when a spouse is not available for a romantic date or night out.

Whatever the cause, the “Valentine’s Effect” has sent many couples into divorce proceedings. However, the Los Angeles divorce attorney hopes that couples take whatever necessary precautions in order to avoid turning Valentine’s Day into a relationship D-Day.

While no one has figured out the equation for a perfect and happy marriage, the Wall Street Journal recently featured a study detailing what worked for many married seniors. Many longtime married couples noted that the key to a successful marriage was the determination to make it last from the first day. Others claimed communication, trust and friendship as important factors in making it last.
