“Suction” (ISBN 1466275677) by veteran journalist Tony McGowan shares the story of an overmatched newspaper copyboy who bluffs his way into becoming a crime reporter and quickly discovers that he is in over his head.

When reluctant footballer Aaron Knox applied for a job at one of Australia’s leading tabloids he harbored vague aspirations of becoming a reporter. What he discovered was a world of desperation as the paper became locked in a do-or-die struggle with its main competitor for what remained of the reading public. When Knox is promoted to the crime beat, the pressure mounts and he soon finds himself racing around Sydney by night chasing down car crashes, house fires and murders. Overwhelmed, Knox goes missing at the worst possible moment and is fired. Without any other options, he is soon sucked back into the world of petty crime he fought so hard to escape. Eager to get his life back on track, Knox hatches a plan to resurrect his journalistic career by writing an exposé on the illegal operations of a gang of bikers he has befriended. In order to pull it off, he is going to have to join the Gypsy Jokers and stay alive long enough to file the report.

“Before Rupert Murdoch gave Americans Fox News and before his journalists in London became involved in phone hacking scandals, a young Murdoch purchased the ‘Sydney Daily Mirror,’ an ailing afternoon newspaper that was to make or break his career,” McGowan says. “The Daily Mirror became the foundation stone for his subsequent conquests in Great Britain and America. My novel traces the climactic demise of the Mirror through the story of a fictitious young reporter thrown into extraordinary circumstances.”

Intended to entertain, “Suction” offers darkly humorous glimpses of the Sydney tabloid wars and life inside a pressure-packed newsroom. Based on the author’s experiences in journalism in Sydney, the book paints a colorful portrait of the city, its outlaw bikers and the Australian male psyche at its most devious.

“Suction” is available for sale online at Amazon.com and other channels.
