Newport Beach, Calif. - One in 10 Americans suffers with hypothyroidism, or low thyroid function. Yet approximately half of them are unaware that inadequate thyroid hormone production may underlie their symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, depression, high cholesterol, dry skin, and constipation.

Physicians often overlook hypothyroidism for two reasons. First, symptoms are not unique to low thyroid function and may be attributed to other health problems. For example, hypothyroidism is particularly common among older women—as many as 1 in 5 over 50 is affected—and symptoms are often chocked up to menopause.

Second, physicians often depend on blood tests such as thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to make a diagnosis. If TSH is in the normal range, hypothyroidism is ruled out. In reality, this test is not foolproof. Many patients with normal TSH have low levels of active thyroid hormones, and once they’re given a trial of natural thyroid, signs and symptoms often dramatically improve.

Synthroid is a synthetic version of T4, the most abundant thyroid hormone. Before it can be used by the body, T4 must be converted into T3, but many people, especially as they get older, are unable to efficiently make this conversion. A better, though largely ignored, thyroid replacement is Armour natural thyroid, which contains the entire gamut of thyroid patients.

Julian Whitaker, MD, founder of the Whitaker Wellness Institute in Newport Beach, CA, reports, “I’ve seen great results time and again when patients try Armour thyroid or switch from Synthroid. They report easier weight loss, increased energy, and improvements in overall health.”
