Tampa, Fla. - You could say Rick Harper from Harper Realty in Tampais rip roaring mad over bearish real estate talk.

That's because the troubled housing market opens a door to opportunity for first-time homebuyers and investors, says the real estate investment expert. But he says you’d never know it reading a newspaper or watching the news.

“The gloom and doom is ridiculous,” says Harper.  “It seems like some people are only comfortable buying real estate when it’s going through the roof.”

He says buying high may be what makes people feel comfortable, but it’s not the way to make money.

From his office in Tampa, Harper and his colleagues work with buyers from across the country who are looking for investment property to buy.  He scouts out emerging markets and undervalued homes where the gain can be great.

He says the same principals that apply to the stock market work for the real estate market.  The most important lesson is to buy low, sell high.

“For whatever reason people panic when real estate values go down,” says Harper.  “I see it as a time to buy.”

He says the negative talk about real estate scares away would-be buyers and delays any recovery that might start occurring.

Harper understands that for those who are upside down—they owe more on the house than it is worth—become uneasy in times like now.  He says, for those people, if they have the wherewithal, it would be wise to buy a second home to balance any likely losses.

“In the stock market investors often buy more stock when the market drops dramatically,” says Harper, “the same principal should apply to real estate.”
