Washington, D.C. / Saying she now has grave concerns that the June, 2006 deaths at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility were not suicides as the commander had reported, Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) fired off a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder asking his office to "open an investigation" into the matter.
In a letter dated January 25, 2010, Rep. Eshoo references an article in the March issue of HARPER'S MAGAZINE. The article, based principally on an account from Sgt. Joe Hickman backed up by other soldiers and a report by Seton Hall University School of Law’s Center for Policy & Research 'Death in Camp Delta,' alleges that the deaths of three detainees at Guantanamo Bay were not suicides as the commander of the facility had announced.
The article also raises questions about the thoroughness of a subsequent investigation conducted by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS).
"I'm calling on you today to open an investigation of these grave allegations," writes Rep. Eshoo. "I'm also calling on you to review the report of the NCIS to determine its veracity, and should your conclusions warrant, to then take the appropriate actions."
Josh Denbeaux, the attorney for Sgt. Hickman, says he applauds the Congresswoman for asking for an investigation.
"Sgt. Hickman put his career and his reputation on the line to come forward," says Denbeaux, "Rep. Eschoo's actions moves the process one step closer to an investigation. I know Sgt. Hickman is happy about that."
