Los Angeles, Calif. / It's a first of a kind cinematic collaboration between China and Hollywood that's been years in the making.
And now the film set in China in the 1970s following the end of the Cultural Revolution, opens the Chinese American Film Festival (CAFF) Thursday in Hollywood, ahead of more than 50 films to premiere at the month-long event.
TURNING POINT 1977 is the first film of its kind to confront the events of young students living in post-Mao China. The dictator's death ended an era known as the Cultural Revolution because it was filled with youth militarism and bloodshed. The film dramatizes that fight and their struggle to return to school after having been consigned to work camps for “re-education”. The film was originally produced in China where it won Best Picture. It is now been adapted for American audiences after a collaborative effort with Hollywood.
TURNING POINT 1977 won Best Picture in China as EXAM 1977, and was renamed and edited to appeal to a Western audience. The film is a co-production of IDG China Media and Shanghai Film Group, one of China’s largest film and media conglomerates.
"What resulted is a film that bridges the Chinese and American film worlds with the true account of young people suddenly able to realize their educational freedom," says Hugo Shong, chairman of IDG China Media, which co-produced the film.
The film reflects the festival’s philanthropic efforts toward educational causes.
“CAFF this year has a bigger job to do in terms of charity fundraising,” says festival President James Su. “We will donate the funds to the schools in the earthquake-stricken area in Sichuan, China and our goal is to build an electronic library for the kids.”
The Directors Guild of America will hold a news conference for TURNING POINT 1977 at 5:00 p.m. on October 29, 2009.
The opening ceremony will follow at 6:00 p.m.
