WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. / The Seven Oaks Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) will present a gift to the Seven Oaks Elementary School student body on Thursday April 21. With their profits over $20,000 from the many fundraisers that were held throughout the 2010-2011 school year the Seven Oaks Elementary School ("SOES") PTA decided that they would purchase an age appropriate reading book for all 937 students that attend Seven Oaks Elementary School. But it doesn’t stop there, the $4,490 purchase was made through the Scholastic Book Fair that was held at the school, where 25% of the sale goes back to Seven Oaks Elementary School and will be used to purchase equipment for the Media Center. If that wasn’t enough, Scholastic Books “One for Books®” Program will be matching the SOES PTA’s purchase with a donation of one book for every dollar spent to three national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping kids and families in need: Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc., the Kids In Need Foundation, and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
The Seven Oaks Elementary School PTA had a record year in raising funds and already made several purchases for the school. Teachers were asked to provide wish lists to the PTA, and to their surprise most of their requests were fulfilled by the SOES PTA immediately. Some of the items provided included: New Gymnastic Mats for the PE department, eight $50 gift cards to the scholastic book fair to increase classroom libraries, new kick balls, bases, and a new fitness ladder. The Sea Turtles Pod was also given a $150 sponsorship for their Autism Walk and a new banner for the Special Olympics. The PTA also reimbursed for the fifth grade's “Super Five” T-Shirts, a shirt given to all of this years fifth graders which was designed by them and lists the names of the graduating class on the back of the shirt. This year the PTA also introduced a Teacher Class Room Grant, where teachers were asked how they would spend $50 on their classroom. All of the teachers that applied for the grant were awarded a $50 Visa gift card. “Even though we purchased several items for the school we still wanted to do something that would have an positive impact on all the students at SOES,” said Denise Nicholas, President of the SOES PTA. Melissa Sabarese, Treasure of the SOES PTA, explained, “The idea of giving each child a new book to read came to me when I heard that many children couldn't participate in the book fair because they just didn’t have the money to do so. This really bothered me, so after looking over our budget I presented the idea of giving each child a book, to our executive board and received unanimous support for this initiative. It was when we presented our plan to Charla Palmer, Seven Oaks Elementary Media Specialist, that we heard of Scholastics “One for Books®” program and we all got really excited. Our gift will not only touch each and every student at our school, but thousands of children around the world as well would be positively impacted.”
Thanks to the SOES administration and staff, our sponsors and especially our hard working members, we had a very successful year and we can’t wait to see how we can top it next year.” Said Denise Nicholas, President of the SOES PTA
