BERKELEY, Calif. / The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra (YPCO) in Berkeley, Calif., provides a nurturing musical environment in a smaller setting than the large symphonic orchestras, which allows for a high degree of individual attention for orchestra members and opportunities to explore concerto and chamber repertoire, in addition to the orchestral experience.
“We would appreciate your help in spreading the word about YPCO among your friends and family, among your community,” says YPCO’s charismatic and inspiring conductor, Rem Djemilev. “For many young musicians YPCO has served as an excellent launching pad, helping them to carry their skills, talent and love for music into adulthood. YPCO is the experience of joy, excitement and fun making beautiful chamber music together, creating musical friendships for a lifetime, becoming confident, skilled and strong as a person!”
Founded in 1983, at a time when music funding was being cut in public schools throughout the Bay area, YPCO has experienced remarkable growth in the last 27 years. What began as a single all-strings orchestra is now three orchestral groups: the Preparatory Ensemble, which serves the needs of the youngest string players; the Chamber Orchestra, for string players ready for a more challenging ensemble, and the Senior Chamber Symphony, which is geared toward high school musicians and provides them with a full chamber orchestra experience involving strings and winds. Each student, regardless of his or her skill level, receives expert leadership, individual attention and encouragement, which has helped YPCO develop a reputation as a top-notch Bay area children’s music program.
“We normally receive referrals from music teachers throughout the Bay area,” says orchestra manager Deborah Schmidt. “We have a big list of instructors who always send their children to us because they have a great opinion of the quality of musical education we provide. They also know we want to help our students build a life-long relationship with music, regardless of what their future occupation might be.”
YPCO is now scheduling auditions for its 2011-2012 YPCO season. Regularly scheduled auditions will be held May 21, but tryouts can also be individually scheduled at more convenient times if necessary. Prospective members and their families are invited to attend YPCO’s two spring concerts (May 14 and May 22) free of charge. YPCO also offers a delightful Saturday morning summer program, characterized by a relaxed yet musically serious atmosphere, intimate size, and lots of top-quality coaching and individual attention. Enrollment is open to YPCO members and non-members alike! This year’s session will run on Saturdays from June 11 through July 30, with an informal concert on July 30. Rehearsals and concert will be held at St. John’s. Enrollment is open to string players at the Preparatory, Chamber Orchestra, and Senior Chamber Symphony levels. For more information about the Young People’s Chamber Orchestra and for audition and performance schedules, please visit www.YPCO.org. Tuition assistance is available for all YPCO programs.
About the Young People’s Chamber Orchestra: The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra originally began as a single, all-strings orchestra and has since expanded to include three orchestral groups: the Preparatory Ensemble, the Chamber Orchestra and the Senior Chamber Symphony. Founded by beloved music teacher Ellen Mindell in 1983, YPCO provides a musical learning experience for young musicians throughout the Bay area. Children between the ages of 5 and 18 are instructed in a non-competitive, cooperative environment that instills a life-long love of music and allows students to develop their abilities at their own pace as they work with fellow musicians toward a common goal.
