LOS ANGELES / “Money never sleeps and neither do ex-spouses,” says Christopher C. Melcher. The Los Angeles divorce attorneysays the Diandra Douglas should not receive any compensation from her ex-husband’s new movie, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.”
“The only way Diandra should get any money is if a settlement agreement gives her those rights,” says Melcher. “She shouldn't be entitled to keep going back to the well for more money just because a sequel was made, unless that right was specifically awarded to her in the judgment.”
Diandra received a $51 million divorce settlement, and was also granted a share of the profits from any movie Michael made during their marriage. But Melcher points out that whatever money Michael made from his the “Wall Street” sequel is separate property. The movie was filmed in 2010, 10 years after the two divorced.
The Los Angeles divorce attorneysays that bitterness and jealousy can keep some exes on the lookout for ways to go back to court. “They want to inflict pain on their former spouse, or feel cheated and hope to get the money they think they should have received when the marriage ended,” he adds.
Melcher also says the timing is bad for Diandra, considering Michael’s recent health problems associated with throat cancer. He says “legally, it doesn’t matter. But cases aren’t always decided on the law. The sympathy is with Michael and that may very well have an influence on how the judge decides the case.”
