Rod Blagojevich invited to speak to Oxford Union; asks just for permission to travel to U.K.

(PR NewsChannel) / March 04, 2011 / CHICAGO / Rod Blagojevich, the former governor of Illinois, has been invited to speak at the Oxford Union and has requested permission from a federal judge to travel to the U.K. for the speaking engagement.

James Langman, president of the Oxford Union, sent the following to the governor:

"I am writing to invite you to speak at the Oxford Union during the forthcoming academic year. Though I fully understand that there must be many demands on your time, I hope you might be able to honour our world-renowned society by addressing our members at some stage in the near future.

"The Oxford Union has a rich history, having been founded in 1823 to protect and uphold the principles of freedom of speech and debate in England. We now pride ourselves on our reputation as the last bastion of free speech in the Western world. Since our foundation we have hosted world leaders in virtually every field; in the past year alone, we have had the privilege of hosting a diverse range of politicians, actors, artists, musicians, and intellectuals, including Sir John Major, General Petraeus, Shakira and Martin Sheen. We would be delighted to welcome you to Oxford and host you at the heart of the University.

"We have a proud tradition of hosting visiting statesmen - figures such as Presidents Nixon, Reagan, and Carter, Madeleine Albright, Senator John McCain, and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States; Benazir Bhutto, Hamid Karzai, and Recep Erdogan, of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Turkey, have all honoured us with a visit. It would give us the greatest pleasure to include you in this great tradition."

Blagojevich is asking to travel to Oxford, England for the engagement.  His current bond prevents him from traveling out of the country.
