TAMPA, Fla. / Your skin is your body’s first line of defense against disease and infection says Dr. Seth Forman. The Tampa dermatologist is taking time during November, National Healthy Skin Month, to remind his patients the importance of taking care of their skin.
“The skin is the largest organ in the body,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “Skin helps regulate body temperature, prevents excess fluid loss and helps the body remove excess salt and water.”
Despite the cooler temperatures, Dr. Forman says it is still important to protect your skin from the sun. UVA and UVB rays are just as damaging in the winter months as any other time of the year.
“Everyone should wear sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher daily,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “You can also guard yourself from ultraviolet light by wearing hats, sunglasses and protective clothing.”
Dryness is another issue in the winter months. “Indoor heating and low humidity can really deplete the skin’s hydration,” says Dr. Forman. “Using body lotion regularly can help lock in moisture to the upper layer of the skin. It can also help prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging.”
Dr. Forman says the best way to maintain healthy skin is to visit a dermatologist every six months. “Regular checkups allow your physician to monitor any suspicious moles or growths,” says the Tampa dermatologist. “This is especially important for those who tan regularly or live in sunny parts of the country, like Florida or California.”
