North Shore-Long Island Jewish Medical Group expands amidst Robert Toussie support

With support like that from Robert Toussie, North Shore-Long Island Jewish has been able to expand its facility network to better serve the New York area.

(PR NewsChannel) / November 03, 2010 / BROOKLYN, N.Y. / As is the case with any of the millions of people who find their lives touched by cancer, Robert Toussie thought about what he could do to fight the horrible disease. He ultimately decided to support in any way he could the dedicated members of the medical community study, treat, research and one day ultimately defeat cancer and make sure no one will ever again have to suffer its effects.

That was the genesis of Robert Toussie’s relationship with the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System (NSLIJ). The successful New York businessman and dedicated philanthropist has made considerable monetary donations to NSLIJ’s fight against pediatric cancer for nearly a decade, and within the last month, the healthcare system has seen its local clinic network expand with two new locations.

Through both state grants and private donations like that from Robert Toussie, North Shore-LIJ has opened one new location in the New York area and announced plans to open another. Each clinic will be more than 6,000 square feet and will provide inpatient and outpatient services to Queens, Long Island and Manhattan and take some of the strain off of other local medical facilities that are already overburdened.

New locations for North Shore-LIJ

Earlier this month, North Shore-Long Island Jewish officially cut the ribbon a new 6,000 square foot location in Whitestone that will specialize in cardiology, internal and pulmonary medicine programs and other specialty care services, according to the ‘Queens Gazette.’ Thanks in part to donations like those from Robert Toussie, the new ambulatory location will help NSLIJ provide top-notch and, perhaps more importantly, diverse medical care to the surrounding communities.

In October, North Shore-Long Island Jewish announced plans to open a new urgent care facility that will actually be on a site on Queens Boulevard in Rego Park that used to be occupied by St. John’s Queens. The hospital had to close their facility in 2009, according to the ‘Queens Chronicle,’ but a grant from the state Department of Health and donations like the ones Robert Toussie has made to NSLIJ have enabled the medical group to launch plans to open a new center that will care for the community that had been left without a neighborhood urgent care clinic since St. John’s Queens’ closing.

Because the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System has clinics, urgent care facilities and research centers throughout the community that Robert Toussie calls home, he has become familiar with the high quality medical care the system provides. Since its founding in 1997, NSLIJ has grown to become the second largest, not for profit, secular healthcare system in the country, based on the number of beds, and cares for a service area of roughly seven million people. The NSLIJ Health System is home of the largest “corporate university” in the healthcare industry and was the recipient of the National Quality Forum’s 2010 National Quality Healthcare Award.

Robert Toussie: Prolific philanthropist

Showing the same emphasis on diversity he used to become one of the most successful businessmen in New York, Robert Toussie’s philanthropy career has been just as varied. In addition to his work with North Shore Jewish, he has also made sizable donations to several organizations that promote religious peace, including the Church of God in Christ in New York, various Jewish schools around the world, and the Convent of Jesus and Mary School in Gujarat, India.

This commitment to charitable acts is something he has passed on to younger generations of his family as well. His son, Isaac Toussie, has helped continue his father’s charitable relationships, and has also forged new philanthropic associations with a diverse network of non-profits and charities of his own. He has worked with several charities who have helped the sick, blind and poor across the country, and it has been documented that thousands of people have benefited from his medical contributions. Lives have been saved, suffering has been diminished, and illnesses have been treated and, in some cases, even cured.
